Fall #14

Distance track (300 yards) today in variable tall grass and weeds. Planned out the augmentation for what I hoped would be motivation. Used scent pads at 5 and 10 and then at 100, 200 and 295. There was an article at 30 past scent pad at 100 and at 30 past 200. Then the scent pad at 295 was 5 before the turn. I also used food drops and scuffing  across the short grass path and 5 after the turn. Re the turn: Otis was distracted by the woods and lost focus (he had indicated the turn) I called him to me, I watered him, I rescented him. When I changed the tone of my voice, he took the turn.  He sniffed an animal hole but then went on to the article.

PS#1 I did not pull his tail 😳   PS #2 I hate Spanish Needles 😖

  1. I would continue to use scent pads for sure. I would revisit the articles games - you are taking on a lot of the responsibility for him picking it up....and by the end of the track he says 'yeah screw Santa' LOL. Article games outside in the yard, OOPS i dropped it on walks at Panorama. He picks it up unprompted, cookies fall from the sky. It is just a tune up. Also I would put in a couple of turns that ping off the woods or parallel the woods because he is so easily distracted by whatever is in the woods, likely squirrels. I thought your augmentation was good today so keep that mindset when you ping/parallel the woods.

  2. I actually like that. He clearly told us he needs practice first paralleling woods, and then pinging off of them as MAM said. And yes…your verbals should happen AFTER he pick the article up…and then, after he picks it up and turns towards you. I love the length, you laid it beautifully. Somewhere in the near future is a longish, straight, heavily scuffed track 10 yards parallel to the woods. Next time, 5 yards parallel. Then, so close your shoulder is bumping the plants at the edge. The closer you are to the woods, the greater the augmentation. And then, to totally blow his mind….parallel closely, and then turn into the woods and end it in there.

  3. Oh—and while I agree with MAM, and I adore the SPs…I don’t adore him circling to find the first one. Let’s make sure (using line length) he TRACKS to the first SP
