Fall #10

Goal of easy/motivational start track follow up to Tuesday class. I did food drops on each leg at 10 and articles at 25. Article indications were great. He had food and/or play rewards after each. There was some change of cover and he also tracked among three grave sites. Back to car, gear off and great free run on farm. Fridays will be a follow up to Tuesday class work. Tuesdays will be the next in the rotation/puzzle/challenge track so this Tuesday will be 2 turns at 90 minutes augmented with articles and food drops and including a heavily scuffed dirt road crossing. Then the 2nd Friday will be an article track.

    2. I worry when the food drop is so ‘standardized’ it’s getting baked in—becoming predictable for the dog. I’d encourage you to determine where Otis is strong, and push the food out after 2 good tracks. Actually, any time he has 2 good tracks, push the food out! If you go to a new site, or offer him a new experience, by all means step back on the food ‘for that session.’ But, when you go back to what he’s familiar with…go back to pushing the food. An occasional (say every 4-6 tracks) high reinforcement track is fine, BUT, if he starts to expect a standardized food pattern and it doesn’t happen…..that’s punishing (behavioral definition, not popular definition) and could put him into extinction conditions.

  2. So he had 2 good tracks at 5 in class Tuesday so pushed out to 10 for Friday and this coming Tuesday. Is this correct thinking? Continue to push out in increments of 5 as long as he’s “strong”? Obviously want to maintain his high level of motivation. So unless introducing a new puzzle/site/challenge, I’d continue to move out in increments of 5 after 2 successful strong motivated tracks?

    1. yes, push it out if you are at Panorama. you cut it back on Tuesday because the conditions were miserable and the cover was weird. in your home turf, push it out after two solid tracks but be flexible and willing to change if needed.

    2. And it doesn’t have to be 5! Can be 2,3 or 4!
