Fall #11

Strong positive start with attention to track/tracking behavior. Food drops at 10. Second positive stracking tracking with food drops at 10 so will push out to 15. Turns and road crossing were good. Placed an article on the far side of the road as a positive reinforcer. Otis stopped before the road crossing when he heard and saw a kestrel fly from the kestrel house to a nearby tree. Article indication retrieve great! Plan to do the 10 article track in a grassy area that runs along a manufacturing plant. Will track on Saturday when there are no workers.

  1. I think your routine is helping at the start flag. After crossing the road, I feel there was some guiding/pulling him over to the track and article. I was thinking it was time to put him on the clock, but then you prompted him to pick it up. I think next time, step back getting him to come with you and then let him track up to the article. After your article track (Judi's straight line of 15/10/15/10....), I would double lay a distance track, fun fresh, one turn. These motivational tracks have all been short, let's augment well and get him rolling on a longer track. Then reassess and talk age.

    1. Thanks so much. I think having a start routine is good for both of us. This PM while O was having his run I walked off 300 yards I could use next week and add a turn with about 50 more. Too long? Too short?

    2. I would stick to 90 minutes, 300 first leg, turn that you are 100% sure of, second leg 40 with a fun article. You decide on augmentation to ensure success.

  2. I can’t get screen pal to load the entire video….hopefully I’ll be able to in the next couple of weeks.

    1. So sorry to read this. Have the previous videos played well?

    2. In the famous words from Seinfeld, it’s not you, it’s me. I could see it at the hairdresser’s, my internet is just too slow. BUT, I did see the first video before my shampoo…..Did you notice that when Otis looks/stares at something, you do too? I actually couldn’t see Otis, because the camera (ie, your glasses) were focused on the tree he was apparently studying. If you look where he looks, it’s possible you are supporting the stare. So sure, glance and make sure everyone is safe….and then look calmly in the direction he was last tracking. And, while I completely support MAM’s count to three and then DO SOMETHING, please (without telling a story—ie, please don’t tell me what’s happening inside the dog, ie, what he’s thinking or feeling) do consider what he’s doing. Standing and staring is different than searching and not finding. Pausing—briefly—to think, and then searching again is different from smoking a joint while admiring the silhouette of the tree.
Since I couldn’t see Otis when he perhaps checked out at the road crossing, I can’t say what happened. Overall, I’m not unhappy with the amount of time it took him to figure out the road crossing….but again, I don’t know what he was doing when you both appear to be looking at the tree!
I think this is as clear as mud….

    3. So we were both definitely looking at the tree. There was a very loud kestrel, loud perhaps because we were getting close to his/her house, that flew up into that tree and we were both looking to see where that loud noise went. Thought Otis went back to work and crossed the road well. (Think MA’s reply was referencing the end of track just before the road when I was guiding him back to find/pick up the article)
