Winter #12
Mistakes today but I will learn from them. Some good takeaways to feel positive about as well. My idea was to have 3 turns with an article on each turn and intermediate articles on the 100yd legs. Articles and their reward for indication. No food drops. Since I was going to double lay the track, I marked each turn with a flag so I would be sure to rewalk accurately. Got so excited about the track and all its possibilities. Had an errand to run for Dan so Otis stayed at home with Dan while I laid the track and ran the errand which aged the track an hour and 20 minutes. Not a problem. The problem came when I picked up Otis and took him straight to the track. In the AMs he has yard play or a farm run with me. He had neither. At the start as I rewatch it I see his behaviors trying to engage and play. 1st mistake ie not having a time of some type of engagement before tracking. As he seems more off track and “playful” I move up to 10’ and what I think was my double line up is one beside it that looks very similar (short evergreen between 2 tall evergreens) so first turn missed. He made the 2nd turn w/ article then cut the 3rd turn because again my double line up of branch and evergreen looked like 2 others. UGH! No excuse for this except I didn’t keep my wits about me plus I didn’t check and recheck the surety of my lineups. Otis did a super job of tracking and getting the “tracklayer” back to the track. Good boy! Reviewing the track he also did a great job I thought of “leave it” which we’ve been working on in a variety of situations including not only sniffing but also attention. Thankfully he was so happy the only damage being done to my ego. Lessons learned.

In the rotation, turns are best trained with legs of 50 yds as outlined on the training tab. This feels like test mode to me. The good things were you used articles creatively, he was article happy and you realized it was not going as planned and moved closer to him.
