Winter #11

 Great day for tracking! With the snow/rain/sleet I was sure there would be no one at the farm this AM when it opened. Wrong! Just as I began to lay O’s track, 2 dogs came running down the hill toward me followed by a young man. He was the house sitter for the farm manager and had the manager’s dogs out for their walk. They marked the gate posts of course and ran here and there finally going on their way down the road and home. I walked back to the beginning of the track (not far) and started it again with heavy scuffing about 6 ft from the gate post as I went with an article in the scuffing and a jackpot at the end then continued the article track pattern. I went home and got Otis, brought him back and started the track. He was awesome! There were some places where he was definitely checking out where the dogs had been but he ignored the gate post and really enjoyed retrieving all his articles. After he finished he had his water and we drove up the hill where I put on his gps and let him run to his heart’s desire. What a joy!

    nice track laying and nice tracking and indication. now the bad news ....you are dropping your tracking line each and every time he picks up an article - as in completely letting it go. no mam.
    on the first video, just after the second article at about one minute 15, he is snuffling the ground. you seem a LONG way down the line to me and if you go back and watch the video, as he snuffles your little feet are dancing right up the line. your arrival pressures him to restart. you cannot be shuffling up the line as he stands still smelling where someone peed. your next track should be easy for him so you can focus on your line handling and standing still. then HUSTLE up the line while he is in motion. my fav periods of this track on video 2 about 34 seconds and one minute 20 seconds - there, he is tracking with enthusiasm with no care for where someone peed.

    OMG—his articles. I’m laughing out loud. He’s SO happy to find them!!! And, MAM is correct—hang onto that line as you walk up. Stupid reason to fail your TDX….or your TD. Says one who almost did. I agree with MAM’s comments….and then again, as I watch this, I want a Saluki. What a ridiculously happy dog!!! (That’s a compliment)

 Great start! True to track. 1st leg was laid within 8 feet of a woods line. Heavy steps into and out of turns allowed me to add to what I record in my visual memory of his loss of scent behaviors. I will repeat this 2 turn track with 20 heavy steps into and out of both turns. FD at 10 after end of each set of heavy steps. FD pattern at 10 and 14. Article indication pick up at end of track. Water offered and taken. [At the beach through 11/6. Next track 11/7]

 Best day today! Lots of enthusiasm and super turns. At the turns I gave him extra line and he made each turn spot on I thought. I was especially pleased there was one very small (!) whine. Otis did not get drawn into the brush pile. He had a strong pull throughout.  Today’s track goal was distance/duration. This straight line track was the longest he had ever done at 414 yards. It was windy blowing across the track. The wind did take Otis off a bit consistently to the right but the food drops at 15 and 20 always brought him back to right on. His start was strong without bucking. He tracked with energy and managed passing a roll hay bale with little more than an extra sniff and leg raise before getting back to work. I did put a larger food drop in the track beyond the bale. Otis stopped briefly at a major change in cover (photo) When he started in the right direction I quickly went with him. He loved the tall weeds, Spanish needles and high grass! His tracking was even stronger. I assume the length was holding more scent? There was evidence of quite a few bedding down areas most likely for deer. Put one of the 3 intermediate articles in this area and Otis was right on. Retrieves were high energy today. I was so pleased with the way Otis handle...
